Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a branch of medicine that utilizes all the standard modern evaluation and diagnostic tools for patient care and also takes advantage of the body’s own healing abilities. Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) was first practiced in 1889 by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., the founder of modern osteopathic medicine.

OMT involves a wide variety of techniques used to improve function of the musculoskeletal system (somatic dysfunction). These techniques may be forceful and/or soothing and can be applied to the joints, their surrounding soft tissues and fluids, muscles, nerves and membranes (fascia). OMT is intended to be used in conjunction with mainstream treatments when it is deemed appropriate.

OMT is HANDS-ON medicine and requires a specially trained physician to use his/her hands to diagnose and treat illness or injury. Using OMT, the osteopathic physician excellent personal trainer (D.O.) will help to restore balance and healthy function to your muscles, joints, membranes and fluids using a myriad of techniques.

Some techniques used in OMT:

  • Balanced ligamentous tension (BLT)
  • Cranial Osteopathy/ Osteopathy In The Cranial Field (OCF)
  • Strain Counter Strain (SCS)
  • Myofascial Release (MFR)
  • Active Release Technique (ART)
  • Visceral Manipulation (VIS)
  • Muscle Energy (ME)
  • High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA)
