Beyond Supplement Overload: The Two Root Causes of Every Chronic Symptom

root-cause-healing-featured

Traditional medicine absolutely has its place. When you have an acute emergency, the ER is amazing. When you need surgery, modern surgical techniques are miraculous.

Just recently, I took my daughter to the ER after a skiing accident left her with a concussion and vomiting. They gave her oxygen and medication for the nausea, and it was the right place for us to be. But the ER doctor also wanted to do a CT scan of her head. Because I have the medical training to know her specific symptoms didn’t warrant it, we declined. CT scans carry a proven increase in cancer risk, and there was no reason to expose a 10-year-old girl to that radiation for almost zero clinical upside.

Traditional medicine is incredible for acute crises, but it defaults to cutting, prescribing, or scanning. If you have a gallbladder issue, the surgeon cuts it out. If you have an arthritic hip, the orthopedist replaces it. If you have a rash, the dermatologist prescribes a steroid cream.

But what happens when you have a chronic, lingering symptom that doesn’t require an ER visit?

This is where functional medicine usually steps in. But as we are going to explore, even functional medicine has a blind spot that is keeping people sick.

The Trap of “Supplement Overload”

Functional medicine is undoubtedly a massive step up when it comes to chronic disease management. I would much rather see a patient on 20 supplements than 20 pharmaceutical medications.

However, many functional medicine practitioners and I have been guilty of this ourselves in the past, falling into the trap of prescribing three supplements to replace one medication. This leads to profound overwhelm. You end up swallowing handfuls of pills every morning, hoping you are fixing the problem, but often, you are just doing natural symptom management.

We have to cut through the noise. We have to find the actual pattern of where your physiology is breaking down.

To do that, I want to share the simplest, most powerful framework I use in my clinic. I implore you to start looking at every single one of your symptoms through this exact lens.

The 2 Root Causes of Every Symptom

Content Image 01-symptom-root-cause-tree

No matter how simple or complex your chronic disease or symptom is, it ultimately boils down to just two root causes:

1. Deficiency (Are you missing something?)

Deficiency means your body lacks something it desperately needs to thrive. This could be a physical nutrient, like magnesium or Vitamin D. It could be adequate natural light. But it also goes beyond the physical: you could be deficient in community connection, deep sleep, or an emotionally supportive partner.

2. Toxicity (Are you carrying something you shouldn’t?)

Toxicity means you are carrying a burden your body was never designed to handle. Physically, this could look like mold toxicity, Lyme disease, or heavy metal accumulation. Emotionally, it could look like chronic stress, an unresolved trauma, or remaining in a toxic relationship.

Think of your body like a tree. Typical medical protocols fail because they spend all their time trying to decorate the branches (managing symptoms), while completely ignoring the fact that the roots are either starving (deficiency) or poisoned (toxicity).

The Paradigm Shift: The next time you experience a flare-up, brain fog, or chronic pain, don’t just ask, “What pill or supplement can make this go away?” Instead, ask: “What is my body missing, or what is my body trying to fight off?”

The 8 Pillars of Health: Where Are You Breaking Down?

To find out where your specific deficiencies or toxicities live, we have to look at the foundations of your life.

Many practitioners casually brush over “lifestyle medicine,” telling you to just “exercise 20 minutes a day.” But what does that actually mean? We need to be far more comprehensive. I look at health through the 8 Pillars.

While many people prioritize food and movement first, I challenge you to look at this list and identify your weakest link. Where are you deficient? Where are you toxic?

  1. Spirit: Do you have a sense of purpose?
  2. Community: Do you have deep, supportive connections, or are you isolated?
  3. Food & Nutrition: Are you fueling your cells or inflaming them?
  4. Water: Are you truly hydrated with clean, mineralized water?
  5. Sleep: Are you getting restorative recovery?
  6. Movement: Are you sedentary, or are you building strength and circulation?
  7. Air Quality: How are you breathing, and what are you inhaling?
  8. Electrical: Are you getting sunlight and grounding, or are you chronically exposed to artificial light and EMFs?

Your Homework: Give yourself a grade (from A to F) in each of these eight pillars. Be honest.

If you are grading yourself an “F” in Community and Sleep, no amount of expensive supplements or restrictive diets will fully heal you. You have to find the crumbling pillar and shore it up.
